English Seeks to Strengthen Emergency Preparedness in Schools

I have acted to bolster the school emergency preparedness bill through an amendment to give school districts the option to expand the number of school emergency and security drills they conduct during school year.

Rep. Sid Kavulich (D-Lackawanna) introduced House Bill 2215 to require school districts to conduct at least one school emergency and security drill during the school year. Under current law, schools have the option on whether or not to have emergency and security drills.

Kavulich and I worked together to amend House Bill 2215 to give school districts the opportunity to substitute two of the 10 required fire drills with school emergency and security drills.

The House Education Committee unanimously voted in favor of my amendment and House Bill 2215. The bill now heads to the full House for a vote. Below are Kavulich’s and my remarks at the Education Committee meeting.
